What inspired me to do Interior Design
A statement of my career story

17 subjects a week, 10 classes a day, each class 1 hour. That’s how I’ve spent my life in school back in Vietnam, my home country. Trying to navigate in academics and in life. School was such a huge part of my life and I take pride in the values that was taught to me, including the values that our beloved president Ho Chi Minh taught us. He, his whole life was dedicated to the country and for the people. The concept of such unconditional love he had for his people sure is cheesy but it never stopped sticking with me when I think about my purpose of designing.
As a teenager I followed my parents footsteps who organized multiple donation events and participated in school scaled non-profits organizations throughout middle and high school. I visited a total of 2 different orphanages and that’s when I learned the importance of safety, security and comfort in homes, of living spaces and then you guess it, Interior design. Interior design has the strength to control people’s behavior and emotions hence lifestyle. Improving interior design means improving living standards.
How can I make such changes? How does a change in floor tiles or upholstery materials so significant in enhancing one’s experience? What are current designers doing to tackle world issues and challenges? How do I be a part of that, going from small changes to big amendments? Even if I’m just one of the millions designers out there, I don’t want to stop asking questions and stop thinking of solutions. What interior designers are doing out there matters and is incredibly important. They think of the people, the building, the design, down to the smallest details. It is a job that entails way more than what meets the eye.
Learning from exposure is what makes design. Growing up in a second world country where we stands in the shadows of the great innovations and cultures from the more dominant countries, it induces curiosity, ambition, breakthrough and more empathy. Spending some time in an interior design college program, I found that that is how I want describe myself as an interior designer. I’m getting there. I know it.
